Won seven individual ACC and was a three-time All-America in 1963, 1964 and 1965. First-team All-America in the 200 free in 1962-63, the 100 and 200 free and the 400-free relay in 1963-64 and the 400-free relay in 1963-64. Merrill won ACC championships in the 100 and 200 free and 400 IM in 1962-63 and 1963-64, the 400-free relay in 1962-63 and the 500 free and 400-free relay in 1964-64.
