1926— Jack Cobb: Men’s Basketball, Baseball (Durham, N.C.)
The Durham native is one of eight men’s basketball players whose jerseys are retired (he played before players wore numbers on their uniforms). Nicknamed “Mr. Basketball.” Also played baseball. Carolina’s first three-time All-America in any sport. Led UNC to Southern Conference titles in 1924, 1925 and 1926. The 1924 team went 26-0 and was later declared national champions by the Helms Athletic Foundation. Helms also named Cobb the 1926 National Player of the Year. Averaged 13.6 points in 1924, a team-high 9.5 in 1925 and a team-best 11.9 in 1926. Was second in career scoring behind Cart Carmichael when he finished his career. Carolina’s leading scorer in three of the four Southern Conference Tournament games in 1924, which capped the unbeaten season, including 15 points in the championship game win over Alabama. Member of the North Carolina and Helms Sports Halls of Fame.
