2006— Laura Gerraughty: Women's Track and Field (Nashua, N.H.)
A four-time NCAA champion in the throws. Won NCAA titles in 2003 (outdoor shot put), 2004 (indoor and outdoor shot put) and 2006 (outdoor shot put). She earned 10 All-America honors and won 13 Atlantic Coast Conference individual event championships. A member of the 2004 United States Olympic Team, Gerraughty set UNC records in five events and established the all-time collegiate record in the indoor shot.
She overcame a wrist injury that forced her to miss the 2005 outdoor season and threatened to end her career. She returned in 2005-06 to finish second in the country in the indoor shot and win the shot at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Gerraughty was MVP of the 2006 ACC Championships after winning three throws events (discus, shot and hammer). She also was named 2006 Southeast Region Track and Field Athlete of the Year and won the shot at the prestigious Penn Relays for the fourth time, a feat only five women have ever accomplished at that meet.
The biology major was a first-team Academic All-America three times and received the ACC’s Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarship.
