2011— Mateo Sossah: Men's Track and Field (Mons-en-Baroeul, France)
Sossah was the first athlete to win the ACC decathlon title four times, winning the event from 2008-2011. A native of Mons-en-Baroeul, France, Sossah finished in the top 10 in the (indoor) heptathlon twice and the (outdoor) decathlon four times at the NCAA Championships. He was second in the heptathlon as a junior and second in the decathlon as a sophomore.
He won the ACC heptathlon as a junior, giving him five individual ACC titles. Sossah became the first Tar Heel to score 8,000 points in the decathlon in a meet when he compiled 8,044 points at the 2009 NCAA Championship.
He set and still holds the UNC records for the heptathlon with 5,886 points in 2010 and the decathlon with 8,044 points.
Sossah (pronounced muh-TAY-o SO-suh) is the recipient of an ACC Post-Graduate Academic Scholarship and went to business school in France.
He competed in the 2009 IAAF World Championship in Berlin.
