1925— Merle D. Bonner: Football, Baseball (Beaufort, N.C)
Captain, and played left fielder and catcher on the 1924 and 1925 baseball teams. Halfback on the football team. Nicknamed “Rabbit,” he fractured his arm but played for another quarter and scored a touchdown before being removed in the 1925 football game against Duke, which the Tar Heels won 41-0. Was president of the Carolina Athletic Association for the 1923-24 school year and a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. After graduating, Bonner attended UNC Medical School.
