1924— Monk McDonald: Men’s Basketball, Football, Baseball (Charlotte, N.C.)
The Charlotte native starred in football (quarterback), basketball (guard) and baseball (shortstop) in the early 1920s. Lettered in all three sports for four seasons. The first recipient of the Patterson Medal. Earned All-Southern Conference honors in basketball in 1922 and 1924. Helped lead UNC to a 26-0 record and 1924 national championship as voted by the Helms Athletic Foundation, Carolina’s first team national championship in any sport. Football team finished first in the Southern Conference in 1922 with a 9-1 record. Had a 95-yard kickoff return against NC State in 1922. Batted over .300. Captain of the basketball team in 1923 (basketball team did not have a head coach that season) and the head coach in 1925, which he did while attending medical school. Member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
