1930— Ray Farris Sr.: Football, Boxing, Baseball (Charlotte, N.C.)
First of four generations of the Farris family to play at UNC. Football captain. His son, Ray, won the Patterson Medal in 1962, becoming the only father-son duo to win the award.
Described as a “swash-buckling, hell for leather guard.” Played guard, linebacker and punted on the football team. Captain of the boxing team and pitched for the baseball team. President of the student body. Member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of the Grail. Led UNC to 9-1 record his senior season in 1929 when Carolina outscored the opposition, 346-60. It was called the “Team of a Million Backs.” Leading vote-getter on 1929 All-Southern Conference team and a second-team Knute Rockne All-America. Studied law and coached the freshman football team. Served in England, France, Belgium and Germany during World War II.
