1974— Tony Waldrop: Men's Track and Field (Columbus, N.C.)
One of the most accomplished track stars in U.S. history and a Morehead Scholar. ACC Athlete of the Year in 1974 (over NC State’s David Thompson, who won the award in 1973 and 1975 and led the Wolfpack to an NCAA championship in 1974).
While at Carolina, set the world record in the indoor mile in the San Diego Games and ran 11 consecutive sub four-minute miles. Won NCAA championships in 1973 in the indoor 1000 yards and 1974 in the indoor mile, six ACC championships and was a six-time All-America in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
Won a gold medal in the 1,500 meters in the 1974 Pan Am Games, then retired prior to the 1976 Olympics to pursue a career as an educator and college administrator.
Member of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame and the North Carolina High School Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame.
