1934— Virgil Weathers: Men’s Basketball, Baseball (Shelby, N.C.)
All-Southern Conference men’s basketball honoree in 1932 and earned three All-Southern Conference Tournament honors (first team in 1932 and 1934 and second team in 1933). Led the Southern Conference in scoring in 1934 and was Carolina’s second-leading scorer in each of the previous two seasons. Was the senior class president. Hit .359 for the baseball team that won the Southern Conference title as a senior.
Was a beachmaster on Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 and led the marine assault on Okinawa in 1945 for which he received a Purple Heart and French Croix de Guerre for his valor.
