DURHAM, N.C.-The University of North Carolina rowing team came away from Saturday's dual meet against Duke with mixed racing results and improved training focus heading into a month of practices prior to the team's next competition.
Competing at Lake Michie, Duke took three of the day's five races, beginning with the varsity eight, which the Blue Devils won by a second. "That was a heart-breaker," UNC coach Joel Furtek said. "We learned a lesson in that race."
Next up was the pairs, a race in which two UNC boats built a substantial lead but interfered with each other, slowing both their times. Still, the UNC B boat won the race by 35 seconds, while UNC A finished third behind Duke B.
After Duke claimed the novice eight, UNC rebounded to take first, second, fifth and sixth places in the varsity four. "That spoke well for our ability to go out and race hard," Furtek said. It was the third race of the day for four varsity rowers-Laura Fogt, Heather Higgins, Rachel Kolbinsky and Erin Neppel-who had also competed in the varsity eight and in the pairs.
Carolina's boats finished third and fifth in the women's double, the final race of the day.
"Overall, we weren't as sharp as we needed to be today, but we bounced back from the eight and had a good effort in the pairs," Furtek said. "Then we went out and nailed the fours.
"Our team learned a lot and this is the kind of day that will make us faster. We had an opportunity to push ourselves and now we'll have a new focus as we go into the four weeks before our next competition."
The Tar Heels will race next on Nov. 6-7 in Gainesville, Ga. The Nov. 6 Head of the Chattahoochee and the Nov. 7 Chattahoochee Chase both will be held at Lake Lanier.
