UNC Women's Cross Country Wins ACC Championship, Men Take Seventh

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The sixth-ranked University of North Carolina's women's cross country team had an outstanding performance Monday and won the ACC Championship at the Finley Cross Country Course in Chapel Hill.
Seniors Trish Nervo and Heather Tanner finished second and third overall with times of 17:15.4 and 17:27.4, respectively, to lead the Tar Heels to their first ACC Championship since 1994. Carolina finished with 44 points in the 5K race supported by junior Karen Everitt who finished tenth overall (17:58.4), Rebecca Walker who came in 13th (18:12.5) and senior Julie Smith who ran a great sprint at the end to take 16th (18:16.6) and secure the championship. "We just have great seniors, there was a lot of pressure coming into this meet as the favorite and this team delivered. N.C. State is a great championship team and this was a great win for our program," said UNC Head Coach Michael Whittlesey. "Trish is always solid and we got a breakthrough performance by Heather Tanner today, she keeps getting stronger and stronger."
N.C. State junior Christy Nichols finished first overall with a time of 17:11.8 and led the Wolfpack to its 56-point performance and second place. The win by Carolina marks the first time that N.C. State has not won the ACC Championship since UNC won it in 1994. The Wolfpack had won 13 of the 17 conference championships.
On the men's side, N.C. State set an ACC Championship record by scoring 16 points, breaking their own previous mark of 18 set in 1995. The Pack also won their fifth-consecutive ACC title and in the process, took first, second, third and fourth overall led by senior twins Chan and Corby Pons who timed at 24:19.4 and 24:30.7, respectively. Senior Abdul Alzindani and junior Chris Dugan rounded out the top four as State won by a margin of 54 points over second-place Duke.
UNC's men's team finished seventh led by freshman David Stroupe who came in 19th with a time of 25:46.0 and junior captain Nick Iauco who came in 25th with a time of 25:55.2. "We really got off to a difficult start and had some trouble running as a team today," said Whittlesey. "David Stroupe is one of the top freshman in the conference and has been our number one runner from start to finish this season. We are a young team and will continue to get stronger."
