RALEIGH N.C.- Ty Roofner's 4-0 decision over Jason Gore at 197 pounds, the next-to-last match of the evening, gave North Carolina an insurmountable lead at 23-12, and the Tar Heels went on to defeat NC State 26-12 in an Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling match Wednesday evening at Reynolds Coliseum.
The win lifted UNC to 4-2 on the season, 1-0 in the conference, while NC State fell to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The Tar Heels got off to a quick start in the match when Chuckie Connor, ranked No. 5 nationally at 125 pounds, made a late move on the Wolfpack's Lee Carroll, ranked No. 16, turned Carroll over and pinned him at 6:40, giving North Carolina a 6-0 lead in the team scoring. Connor, leading 7-3 in the match before the final takedown and pin, improved to 14-1 with the win, his second pin of the season. UNC made it 9-0 with 19th-ranked Brad Byers (13-6) beat the Pack's Brad Bauer, 8-5, at 133. After Tommy Davis (11-2) got NC State on the board with a 5-1 win over Josh Cowley at 141, 10th-ranked JohnMark Bentley beat Quan McCollum by a major decision, 19-6. Bentley improved to 13-3 with the win.
The Wolfpack got back in the match briefly when Pierre Pryor let Pat Cadwallader up for an escape, then flattened Cadwallader when he was slow to get off the mat and pinned the UNC freshman at the 5:51 mark of the 157 match, cutting the North Carolina lead to 17-12. Pryor, leading 9-2 before the crucial escape and subsequent cat-nap by Cadwallader, recorded his third pin of the season and improved to 9-5 overall.
Dan Calhoun (12-4) then got a major decision for the Tar Heels, 13-4, over Kyle Guffey at 165 to up the UNC lead to 17-9. Kevin Boross's takedown in the final 20 seconds of the 174-pound bout lifted him to an exciting 4-3 win over UNC's Jamie Groudle, cutting the Tar Heel lead to 17-12. Boross improved to 12-3 with the win, but the Heels got a 6-3 win from Corey Bell (13-2) over Zach Breitenbach at 184, followed by Roofner's 4-0 decision over Gore at 197. UNC heavyweight Matt Kenney (9-2) defeated the Wolfpack's Billy Noble 5-2 for the final points of the evening.
