On This Day in Carolina History
June 21, 1999 | General
Charlie Scott made his final game in Carmichael Auditorium a memorable one, scoring 28 points in a 98-70 rout of Virginia Tech.
With Dennis Wuycik adding 18 points and Lee Dedmon 17, the Tar Heels raced to an easier-than-expected victory. Carolina blew the game open in the first half, taking a 49-24 lead after 20 minutes.
Wuycik pulled down 14 rebounds and Scott had 13 as the Tar Heels dominated the backboards, 55-42. Scott also had five assists in 35 minutes of action.
When he was taken from the game in the closing minutes by Coach Dean Smith, Scott received a 12-minute standing ovation.
"It was sort of embarrassing because I had missed my last shot," said Scott afterwards.
The applause was so sustained that UNC Coach Dean Smith inserted Scott back into the lineup for the final seconds. He promptly drilled home one of his patented pullup jumpers from 22 feet.
The game also was a milestone for Smith. It marked the 165th win of his nine-year coaching career. That made him the winningest coach in Tar Heel history. Frank McGuire had been the previous leader with 164 victories in his nine years at Chapel Hill.
