CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--North Carolina has now moved up from third place to second on the royalty earnings list of 180 schools represented by the Collegiate Licensing Corporation.
Carolina took over second place from the University of Kentucky with a strong showing in the final quarter of 1998. Materials with the Carolina logo earned $983,152 for the University from October to December of last fall. That was the best quarter in school history and represented a 17 percent increase from the $816,723 earned the previous fall.
Continued strong showings by Tar Heel athletic teams and improved market conditions were cited as the likely factors in the large increase.
Of the money generated through Carolinas relationship with Collegiate Licensing, 75 percent goes to scholarships for needy students. The Department of Athletics receives only 25 percent.
Zephyr Graf-X replaced Nike as the University's top licensee. The company is a hat manufacturer that has utilized designs with new colors which have been a hit in the marketplace. Nike is second in royalties and reported a large increase in sales during the past quarter.
