Maryland Sweeps Softball Doubleader From Tar Heels

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Fawna Lackovic singled home freshman Kiesha Pickeral with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to give Maryland a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over North Carolina and a doubleheader sweep of the Tar Heels. Junior Sarah Putnam had three RBI to lead the Terps to a 9-3 victory in game one. Senior pitcher Kelly Shipman went the distance in both games in earning her 21st and 22nd victories of the season.
Maryland improves to 38-18 and 5-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while North Carolina is now 34-20 and 2-4 in the ACC.
The Terps won the second game in the seventh inning as they scored three runs on four hits. Shipman led off the inning with a single to center and advanced to second when sophomore Michelle Burrell was hit by a pitch. An infield single by sophomore Jennifer Potzman loaded the bases with no outs. After a lineout to Tar Heel second baseman Stephanie Jurkowski, Pickeral tied the game with a single to leftfield scoring Shipman and Burrell. North Carolina than forced the second out on a fielders choice setting up Lackovic's game-winning heroics. She looped a single just inside the right field line to score Pickeral from second.
North Carolina had taken a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run by freshman Kelly Ramsey. The Tar Heels scored two runs in the third inning on a home run to centerfield by junior Crystal Henderson. Henderson hit two home runs and was three-for-five with two runs scored on the day.
Shipman allowed only three hits and struck out one in the second game. Only two of the four runs she allowed in game two were earned. For the day she allowed only three earned runs in 14 innings pitched. North Carolina entered the game as the top hitting and run scoring team in the ACC.
Maryland scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and Shipman allowed only four hits as the Terps won game one, 9-3. Putnam had two RBI while junior Cortney Madea, Lackovic and Pickeral each had one RBI during the first inning. Putnam added another RBI in the fifth. Her three RBI during the game marked a single-game career high.
Shipman struck out four and walked four in gaining the victory. She allowed only one earned run. Offensively, she had two hits and scored two runs.
