On This Day in Carolina History
June 21, 1999 | General
Rick Fox made both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity with just four seconds to play, giving North Carolina an 81-79 victory over Georgia Tech at the Smith Center.
Tech had rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to tie the game in the closing moments. Dennis Scott, Brian Oliver and Kenny Anderson keyed that Jacket comeback only to see the Tar Heels make the big plays down the stertch to pull out the win.
Scott had scored 24 points in the first half, making five of eight three-pointers, in a great shooting exhibition. But, with UNC's Scott Williams going five-for-five from the floor and making all four of his free throws for 14 points, the teams were tied,44-44, after 20 minutes.
Williams and Fox led a Tar Heel 16-3 run to start the second half as Carolina grabbed its 13-point advantage. The lead was still 69-56 with 11:42 to play. But, that's when Scott, Oliver and Anderson sparked Tech's comeback.
The Yellow Jackets finally tied the game, 77-77, on an Oliver three-pointer with 1:43 left. Williams found Pete Chilcutt open for a layup with 1:07 remaining as the Tar Heels recaptured the lead. But, Anderson hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds to go, tying the game again.
Carolina quickly got the ball inbounds and called timeout to set up a final play. Fox was fouled on a drive to the basket and made the winning free throws.
Tech tried to get off a last shot, but Oliver had to step out of bounds to catch a long inbounds pass.
Oliver finished with 19 points , while Anderson had 16 points and a dozen assists.
Williams paced the Tar Heels with 26 points, Fox had 16 and Kevin Madden scored 10. Nine different Tar Heels scored in this game, while all of Tech's points came from its starting lineup.
