Tar Heel Sports Network
June 21, 1999 | General
Even when Carolina fans can see the Tar Heels play with their own eyes, they insist on looking with their ears at the action by tuning in Woody Durham and Mick Mixon on the Tar Heel Sports Network.
One of the most respected and acclaimed radio networks of its kind in the country, the Tar Heel Sports Network will again bring the excitement of Carolina football to life on an outstanding list of stations.
The radio network is just part of Tar Heel Sports Marketing's job. A division of the VilCom, the new name for The Village Companies of Chapel Hill, Tar Heel Sports Marketing is a full-service marketing agency overseeing the production and sales of all University of North Carolina football and basketball media entities, including television, internet, and print and retail products.
If you are tuned into a Carolina game on the radio, listening to the head coaches on their radio call in shows on Thursday nights or watching game higlights on "Inside Carolina Football" on Sunday, reading the official game program, or clicking onto Goheels.com on the Internet, reading Carolina Court magazine, listening to ACC Hotline on Tuesday nights, you are in touch with Tar Heel Sports Marketing.
Vilcom, producers of the Tar Heel Sports Network since 1975, began producing Carolina game program seven years ago and is beginning the sixth year as multi-media rights holder.
Woody Durham is beginning his 28th year as the "Voice of the Tar Heels." A native of Mebane, N.C., Durham grew up in Albemarle, N.C., and began his broadcasting career with WZKY Radio at age 16. He graduated from UNC in 1963 with a degree in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures.
Durham and Head Coach Carl Torbush give fans an opportunity to phone in and talk with the Coach every Thursday evening during the football season on the "Carl Torbush Live" call in show.
Durham also will visit with Coach Torbush on "Inside Carolina Football," a daily five-minute program featuring conversations with the Tar Heels Head Coach. Both of these shows are heard on stations throughout North Carolina and beyond.
"Inside Carolina Football with Carl Torbush", hosted by Durham, is a half-hour television program seen each week on a network of stations in North Carolina and on cable networks throughout much of the United States. The show features highlights of the previous game, interviews with current and former Tar Heel players and a preview of upcoming action.
In 1981, Durham was named vice president and executive sports director at Tar Heel Sports Marketing. Since taking over play-by-play duties in September, 1971, he has become a permanent fixture behind the microphone during Tar Heel football and basketball games. Durham has been named North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year 10 times.
Woody and his wife of 35 years, Jean, are parents to two sons, Wes and Taylor. Wes,32, is in his fourth year of play-by-play duties for Georgia Tech. Taylor, 25, is an account executive with WSTP Radio in Salisbury, NC. Both are graduates of Elon College.
Mixon is in his tenth year as color analyst and production manager and his fourth as a local producer of the Carl Torbush TV Show. A Chapel Hill native, Mixon graduated from UNC in 1980 with a degree in broadcast journalism. He was named vice president in 1996.
Mixon came to the Tar Heel Sports Network in 1989 from Columbia, S.C., where he was sports director at WIS Radio. He also has served as play-by-play voice of the Maine Guides of the Class AAA International League and as sports director of WCGC Radio in Belmont, N.C.
