No. 1 Oklahoma State Tops No. 21 Tar Heels, 31-10

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Top-ranked Oklahoma State earned victories in eight of 10 weight classes and defeated a resilient North Carolina squad, 31-10, Sunday evening in collegiate wrestling action in Carmichael Auditorium. The win, the Cowboys 62nd in a row, improved Oklahoma State to 17-0 in 1998-99. No. 21 North Carolina, which had won five straight entering the match, dropped to 8-3.
The Tar Heels got off to a quick start and actually led, 10-9, after four matches. Chuckie Connor earned a major decision victory at 125 lbs. over Jeff Ragan to give UNC a quick, 4-0 lead. Two-time national champion Eric Guerrero defeated Brad Byers by technical fall, 20-5 at 133 lbs., and Jamill Kelly defeated Josh Cowley, 18-9 at 141 lbs., to give the Cowboys a 9-4 edge.
Tar Heel sophomore JohnMark Bentley used a cradle move to pin Charles Walker in 1:19 for a 10-9 UNC lead before the Cowboys won the remaining six matches and held on for a 31-10 win that was closer than the final score indicated.
The Tar Heels return to action when they host Atlantic Coast Conference rival Maryland on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium.
