On This Day in Carolina History
June 21, 1999 | General
North Carolina shot a blazing 64.0 percent from the field in toppling Wake Forest, 115-87, at Carmichael Auditorium.
As usual, forwards Bob Lewis and Larry Miller, the Tar Heels' "L&M Boys," were the big stars. Lewis, a 6-3 junior from Washington, D.C., hit 17 of 27 field goal attempts and made all three of his free throws for 37 points. Miller, a 6-3 sophomore from Catasauqua, Pa., made 10 of 12 shots from the floor and six of eight foul shots for 26 points. In addition, Lewis handed out eight assist and Miller had 10. Miller just missed what would have been the only triple-double in Carolina history as he finished with eight rebounds.
This win gave the Tar Heels their first season sweep of the Deacons since the 1961 season. Carolina had won in Winston-Salem, 99-83, in early January.
The Tar Heels were sizzling from the opening tip and raced to an amazing 60-36 halftime lead against an opponent who traditionally gives them down-to-the-wire battles. Lewis had 20 of his points at intermission as UNC made 26 of 39 shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
Miller and Lewis weren't the only Carolina stars. Guard Tom Gauntlett had 13 points and 10 assists, while Mark Mirken came off the bench to add 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Guards Paul Long and Bob Leonard topped the Wake Forest scoring with 27 and 19 points, respectively. Carolina's passing and shooting was so sensational that it didn't matter, but the Deacons hurt themselves badly by only making 15 of 29 free throws.
