On This Day in Carolina History
June 21, 1999 | General
North Carolina ran its record to 20-0 with a hard-fought 72-69 win over Wake Forest at Woollen Gym.
Lennie Rosenbluth hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor and scored 24 points to spark the victory. Joe Quigg and Bob Cunningham added 14 each, while Tommy Kearns scored 11.
Jim Gilley and Jackie Murdock had 16 points each to pace the Deacon scoring.
The Tar Heels had just a 31-29 halftime lead in a game typical of the ones they played against Wake Forest in 1957. Carolina would defeat the Deacons four times by a total of 18 points in a 32-0 national championship season. Coach Frank McGuire would always say the games against Wake Forest were the most difficult his team played all year.
The lead changed hands throughout the game before the Tar Heels pulled away in the closing moments. They did that without Rosenbluth who had fouled out. Carolina shot 64.0 percent from the floor in the second half and 48.3 percent for the game. That proved to be the difference as the Deacons outscored the Tar Heels, 25-16 from the free throw line.
