Women's Tennis Ease Past Furman, 7-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's 48th-ranked women's tennis team won five singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Furman University at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Monday.
The victory was the fourth in a row for Coach Roland Thornqvist's team and it improved Carolina's overall record to 9-3 on the season. Furman dropped to 8-6.
Carolina clinched the match by winning five matches in singles play. At #6, Junior Jeni Burnette kept her dual match record undefeated by taking a 6-2, 6-2, victory over Jennifer Connell at #6 singles. At # 2 singles, freshman Caroline Hill pulled out a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, win over Furman's Megan Dunigan. Top-seed Jessica Gazangczyk defeated Furman's Meredith Moore, 6-4, 7-5, while junior Cena Hackler captured a 6-2, 6-0, victory over Furman's Gene Holman at #4 singles.
In doubles action, Carolina's Zaganczyk and Hackler beat Furman's Sara Rosenblum and Moore, 8-5. With the win, the doubles team of Hackler and Zaganczyk improved to 7-2 on the season at #1 doubles. At # 3 doubles, senior Sarah Hawkins and Burnette defeated Furman's Connell and Holman, 8-3.
UNC will return to action Wednesday to open up conference play against the 2nd-ranked team in the country, Duke. Play will begin at 4 p.m.at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
