On This Day in Carolina History
June 21, 1999 | General
North Carolina swept both the men's and women's titles at the Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships with a strong showing on the final day at Tallahassee, Fla.
It was the fourth straight title for the Tar Heel women and the second in a row for the men. Carolina finished the meet with 815 points in the women's competition to 734 for Virginia. The UNC men had a 781-667.5 edge over the Cavaliers.
Carolina won only one of four women's individual races on the last day of competition, but together with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay and great overall depth, that proved to be enough. Kari Haag won the 100 freestyle and also teammed with Candiss Johnson, Christy Garth and Ann Hart to capture the relay.
The men got final day wins from Dam Summerlin in the 100 freestyle, Jeff Weiss in the 200 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay of Summerlin, Matt Smith, Jason James and Mark Sediak. It was to be the first of three ACC titles in the 200 breaststroke for Weiss.
