Petrone and Monroe Advance in Main Draw Doubles of The Top of The Hill/ITA Region II Championships

Chapel Hill, NC - Thursday's action in The Top of The Hill/ITA Region II Championships saw junior Marcio Petrone and freshman Nicholas Monroe advance to the round of sixteen in main draw doubles play. The Tar Heel tandem won an 8-3 decision over Alex Herrera and Xavier Luscan of Florida State University. Petrone and Monroe will play Jody Strik and Chris Erickson of William and Mary at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The team of Strik and Erickson advanced with an 8-5 upset win over the number one seeded team of Smith and Yani from Duke University.
Friday will also mark the beginning of main draw singles play. Senior David Cheatwood will open play for the Tar Heels with a morning match against Seth Rose of South Carolina. The match will be played at 8:00 a.m. with the winner advancing to round of 32 action on Saturday.
Marcio Petrone and Trystan Meniane will also begin main draw singles play for Carolina on Friday. Petrone will face Wake Forest's Brett Mauro at 1:30 p.m. and Meniane will oppose Furman's Lee Nickell at 1:00 p.m.
Singles players not advancing on Thursday for the Tar Heels were sophomore Max Hilkey who fell 6-1, 6-3, to Old Dominion's Calin Milos, Nicholas Monroe who fell 6-1, 6-1 to Wake Forest's Trent Brendon, and sophomore Greg Archer who lost 6-3, 6-4 to Wake Forest's David Bere. Also, in the first round of main draw doubles, the Tar Heel team of David Cheatwood and Greg Archer were downed 8-3 by UNC-Charlotte's Nordwall and Peterson duo.
Friday's action will consist of first round singles play as well as round of sixteen and quarterfinal doubles matches. All matches are being held indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
