CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The North Carolina women's tennis team dropped to 1-4 in dual-match play after losing a close match to No. 15 Notre Dame. Carolina won two singles matches and two doubles matches, but four singles wins and the #3 doubles win won the match for Notre Dame.
Carolina senior Jessica Zaganczyk and junior Erin Niebling won at #2 and #3 singles for the Tar Heels. In doubles action, freshman Marlene Mejia and Niebling won at #1 doubles (8-6) and freshmen Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck combined to win at #2 doubles.
"We played extremely hard today, and even though we lost we're playing much better tennis than we did at the beginning of the year," said North Carolina Head Coach Roland Thornqvist. "It's really important for our team to realize that we're getting better and that if we keep improving, then our win-loss record will take care of itself. We came really close to beating a good team today. We just have to regroup and get ready for Richmond."
2The women's team hosts No. 69 Richmond on Monday, Feb. 28, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The match had been postponed twice, once due to a snowstorm and once because of a lack of officials.
