CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's 28th-ranked women's tennis team won its opening dual match of the season in convincing fashion Wednesday night, defeating the UNC-Greensboro Spartans 7-0.
The Tar Heels swept all six singles matches without dropping a set. Winning in the No. 1 spot was senior Jessica Zaganczyk who bested Jenny Gonzalez by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Other Tar Heels posting singles wins were sophomore Caroline Hill, junior Courtney Zalinski, junior Erin Niebling, junior Kristin Koenig and freshman Kate Pinchbeck.
In doubles action, Carolina's duo of Niebling and Koenig defeated UNCG's Weber/Eutzler (8-5), and the Tar Heel tandem of Zalinski and Hill beat Rimel/Edwards (8-1). By taking two of the three doubles matches, Carolina earned the doubles point.
This match was to be the squad's second dual match of the season, but the recent snowstorm postponed Carolina's Jan. 29 tilt with Richmond. That match has been rescheduled for Feb. 17 at 5 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Heels next action is this weekend when they travel to No. 21 Kentucky Saturday and No. 14 Tennessee Sunday.
