CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's women's tennis team dropped its ACC opener Thursday, falling to Clemson 6-3 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The lone Tar Heels posting singles wins were junior Courtney Zalinski, who defeated the Tigers' Christina Oldock (6-3, 6-0) at No. 5, and freshman Kate Pinchbeck, who downed Anna Savitskaya (6-0, 7-6) at No. 6.
Zalinski also teamed with senior Jessica Zaganczyk to claim a victory at No. 3 doubles. The duo defeated Clemson's Savitskaya and Cynthia Clausen by a score of 8-3.
The loss dropped the No. 51 Tar Heels to 5-7 on the season, 0-1 in the ACC. The Tigers, ranked 39th by the ITA, moved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the victory.
"This loss today is a setback for our program," said Tar Heel head coach Roland Thornqvist. "As a head coach, I feel responsible. I don't think I got the team ready in the best way possible. The match tomorrow against Florida State comes as a blessing in disguise. The University of North Carolina women's tennis team has a chance to prove something."
The Heels travel to Raleigh Friday to take on No. 20 Florida State. The teams were originally slated to play March 16 in Tallahassee, but rain postponed the match. Carolina also hosts No. 27 Georgia Tech Sunday.
