ATLANTA -- The North Carolina softball team finished the first day of the Buzz Classic 2000 with a record of 1-1. In the first game against the Univesity of Evansville, the Tar Heels were held scoreless and lost 2-0. Junior Jessica Huff doubled home the first run of the game for Evansville in the fifth inning and it would be all they would need to hold off the Tar Heels. Junior Beth Olen finished the day 2-for-3 for UNC, including a double.
In game 2 the Tar Heels bounced back and defeated the University of Connecticut 6-1. Carolina scored two runs in the top of the third. Junior Michelle Semmes singled home freshman Quinn Porter and senior Crystal Hendeson singled home junior Radara McHugh. Semmes would finish the day going 2-for-4. The Tar Heels would never relinguish their lead. They added insurance runs in late innings including a solo home run by senior Jen Klesaris. Klesaris finished the day 2-for-4 with 1 RBI.
The Tar Heels continue pool play today at 12:30 when they face Virginia Tech, and 5:30 when they face Georgia State. Bracket play begins tonight at 8PM.
