CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In a match that could not be decided until its final point, North Carolina's women's tennis team defeated No. 27 Georgia Tech 5-4 to earn its first ACC win of the season Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Tar Heel tandem of senior Jessica Zaganczyk and junior Courtney Zalinski downed the Yellow Jackets' (10-5, 1-3 ACC) Charotte Pernet and Laura Ozolins at No. 3 doubles by a score 9-8 to give Carolina (6-8, 1-2) the victory.
The teams spilt the six singles matches, leaving the score knotted going into doubles play. Claiming singles wins for the Heels were Marlene Mejia at No. 1, Zaganczyk at No. 2 and Zalinski at No. 5. UNC's other victory came from Kendrick Bunn and Kate Pinchbeck at No. 2 doubles.
"This is a tremendous win for us. Not only because we beat a really good Georgia Tech team, but because it came down to a tie-break at No. 3 doubles for the match, and we were able to get the win," said Tar Heel head coach Roland Thornqvist. "This team has gone through a lot this year, and I'm proud of the way we stepped up and responded."
The Heels next action is Wednesday when they host N.C. State at 5 p.m.
