CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Department of Athletics is currently in the midst of an interim certification review as administered by the NCAA. The certification program was approved by NCAA Division I institutions at the 1993 National Convention as a key component of reform measures supported by university chancellors and presidents.
In 1995, the Department of Athletics completed its initial certification review. Originally, certification was to occur every five years, but in 1997, the NCAA changed the review cycle to once every 10 years. UNC is not up for full review again until 2005, but a standard interim review is under way.
The report is meant to ensure the NCAA's fundamental commitment to integrity in intercollegiate athletics by:
Chancellor William O. McCoy has named Richard L. Edwards, Dean of the School of Social Work, as the chair of the 2000 Interim Certification Committee. The committee has a six-month time period in which to complete the review and report its findings to the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification.
The NCAA may select one of three findings after examining the report: it may certify the University, may find that the University is certified with conditions, or may declare that the University is not certified.
"This is a welcome step in maintaining high standards and integrity in our athletics program," says Dick Baddour, Director of Athletics. "The committee that Dean Edwards leads is a blue-ribbon panel of some of the University's most respected personnel, both in and out of athletics. The full review in 1995 afforded us an excellent blueprint with which to affect positive changes that benefitted the student-athlete experience. The mid-term examination makes sure we are meeting those challenges and help us prepare for the full review in 2005."
Anyone interested in providing information relevant to the committee may contact Dean Edwards at redwards@unc.edu.
