COLLEGE PARK, MD - North Carolina's women's tennis team ended its four-match winning streak Saturday, dropping a close match at Maryland by a score of 5-4.
The Tar Heels' No. 1 player, freshman Marlene Mejia, did not play singles, and UNC dropped the first three singles matches. The lone Tar Heels to claim singles wins were freshman Kendrick Bunn, who topped the Terps' Stacy Walkowitz (6-3, 6-0) at No. 4, and junior Kristin Koenig, who was awarded the win at No. 6 by default.
Mejia teamed with junior Erin Niebling to win a tight match at No. 1 doubles, downing Delila Causevic and Jessica Johnson in a tie-break (9-8 (5)). The Tar Heel tandem of Koenig and sophomore Caroline Hill was awarded the win at No. 3 doubles by default.
With the loss No. 37 Carolina drops to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in ACC play. The Heels have not won a match on the road this season. The win, Maryland's first in conference play, improves the No. 67 Terps to 7-8 overall and 1-4 in the ACC.
Carolina hopes to bounce back and even its conference mark Sunday when it travels to Chalottesville, Va., to take on the No. 60 Virginia Cavaliers at 1 p.m.
