CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Tripp Phillips has moved up to No. 22 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national singles rankings. Phillips, who plays No. 1 singles for the Tar Heels, was ranked No. 80 in preseason rankings and has consistently climbed in the rankings throughout the spring season. Phillips was recently named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team and was the ACC flight runner-up at No. 1 singles.
Phillips compiled a 7-1 mark during the ACC regular season and a 3-0 mark in the conference tournament. He has an overall singles record of 20-5 and has competed against many of the nation's best tennis players. Phillips has played against three of the nation's top five singles players, winning two of those matches. He defeated Virginia Commonwealth's Daniel Andersson (No. 2) and Texas A&M's Shuon Madden (No. 3). Of Phillips' five losses, four of them came to players currently ranked in the ITA's top 40, including two losses to players in the top 10.
This is the first time a North Carolina player has been ranked in the ITA's top 25 since All-American David Caldwell did so in 1996.
In ITA team rankings, North Carolina is currently ranked No. 20. The team finished second in the ACC, compiling an overall record of 17-5, and made it to the final round of the ACC Championship.
