CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - -Hard-charging Florida is putting the heat on North Carolina, but the Tar Heel athletic program held onto sixth place in the first Sears Directors' Cup standings of the spring sports season released Thursday morning by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
The Carolina athletic program, which stood in sixth place at the end of the winter sports season, now has 760 total points in the competition and is holding on to a slim 5.5 point lead over seventh place Florida. The Tar Heels are also in hot pursuit of both Penn State and Nebraska who stand in fourth and fifth place.
Stanford, which has won the Cup five straight years from 1995-99, leads this year's competition with 1,250 points. UCLA is second with 976.5 points and Michigan is third with 865.5 points. The field then is close through the 4-7 spots with Penn State currently fourth with 807.5, Nebraska fifth with 803, UNC sixth with 760 and Florida seventh with 754.5. The remainder of the Top 10 has Ohio State in eighth place with 642 points, Texas in ninth place with 629 points and Wisconsin in 10th place with 625 points.

Thursday's standings added the spring sports of women's golf, women's lacrosse, men's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's tennis, men's tennis and men's volleyball to the mix of competition, which began last fall. The NCAA finish determines points in each sport and those points can vary from sport to sport based on the size of the tournament field in each sport. A school can score in as many as 20 sports, 10 for men and 10 for women. The highest 10 finishes in each gender are used in determining the standings. The Cup began during the 1993-94 which the Tar Heel athletic program crowned as the inaugural champions. Stanford has dominated the Cup since then.
So far in the spring, UNC scored 34.5 points for finishing 33rd in women's golf, 40 points for finishing fifth in women's lacrosse, 20 points for finishing 33rd in women's tennis and 30 points for finishing 17th in men's tennis.
The second spring Sears Directors' Cup standings will be released on Tuesday, June 13. The final standings for the 1999-2000 school year will be released on Wednesday, June 21.
