Nicole Gamble Wins The Triple Jump

Sacramento, Calif. -- The best outdoor triple jump of her career gave former UNC All-America Nicole Gamble a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Gamble leaped 45-feet, 9.75 inches (13.96 meters) on the second of her six jumps.
None of the top three finishers reached the Olympic "A" standard of 46-5.25 that automatically qualifies a jumper for the games in Sydney, Australia. Should both second-place finisher Sheila Hudson (45-8.50) and Tiombe Hurd (45.-7.75), who finished third, jump that far between now and the Olympics, and Gamble not, Gamble would lose her spot on the team. If Gamble jumps that distance, or the other two don't, she will jump in Sydney. If all three reach the standard before the Olympic games, all three will go.
Gamble won the 1999 NCAA indoor title with a leap of 46-1 1/4 inches. She is currently a volunteer assistant coach with the Carolina Track & Field team.
Hudson, the home-town favorite, holds the U.S. triple jump record at 47-3 1/2.
