Chapel Hill - Former Tar Heel and assistant track coach Nicole Gamble will attempt to meet the triple jump qualifying standards at a meet hosted by UNC. Jump for Sydney will take place Wednesday, August 30, at 6:30 p.m.
Admission to the event is free and door prizes will be given to the public.
This meet will provide Gamble another competitive opportunity before the Games as well as a chance to reach the A-qualifying Olympic standard. Gamble won the 2000 Olympic Trials with a jump of 45-9 3/4. The standard required to compete in Sydney is 46 - 1/4.
Athletes have had all summer to meet the qualifying standards. If no athlete meets the standard, only the first place finisher travels to Sydney. However, if another athlete meets the standard, she will accompany Gamble.
Gamble, a native of Chapel Hill, was the 1999 ACC and NCAA Indoor triple jump champion and also holds the Carolina record for this event. An All-America while at Carolina, Gamble recently completed her first year as assistant track coach for the Tar Heels. This would be Gamble's first trip to the Olympic Games.
Also expected to compete are Tiombe Hurd, the third place finisher (45 7 3/4), and Natasha Alleyne-Gib, who finished fifth (45 4 1/2).
