The UNC Athletic Department has announced a generous contribution from Wachovia to support women's athletics at UNC. Wachovia made a $10,000 donation as part of the Wachovia World of Women's Sports at UNC. The program is designed to increase attendance at women's athletic events, highlights the academic, athletic and community service achievements of UNC women athletes, and provide mentoring opportunities for the student athletes with middle and elementary school children all over North Carolina.
"We are very excited about Wachovia's continued commitment to our women's athletics program here at Carolina," said Dr. Beth Miller, UNC Senior Associate Athletics Director. "We are very proud of our women's program and most gracious to Wachovia for helping highlight the achievements of our young women. We are looking forward to building upon the many successes of the Wachovia World of Women's Sports at UNC."
A formal check presentation was made at halftime of the UNC-Tulsa football game on Saturday, Sept. 2. Seven UNC female athletes who have been recognized as Wachovia Women of the Week were on hand as Mary Seagroves, a personal financial planner with Wachovia, presented the check to Dr. Miller.
The Wachovia World of Women's Sports at UNC is the first program of its kind in college athletics.
