Carolina Track & Field Olympians Honored at Men's Basketball Game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Carolina track & field Olympians will be honored during half time of the men's basketball game against Marquette on Saturday (January 13) at 1:00 p.m. at the Dean Smith Center. An unprecedented 11 Tar Heel alumni competed at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia and are responsible for earning a total of seven medals for the U.S. including five gold. The Olympians scheduled to appear include, LaTasha Colander-Richardson, Dominic Demeritte, Nadine Faustin, Nicole Gamble, Monique Hennagan, and Allen Johnson.
Colander-Richardson, a seven-time All-America at UNC, she captured a total of 14 ACC Championship titles and in 1997 was the first ACC athlete to win three individual conference titles at the indoor championships. LaTasha is the Carolina Record holder in the 55m, 60m hurdles and 200 meters and 100m hurdles. At the 2000 Olympic Games, LaTasha won gold in the 4x400 meter relay.
Demeritte, a two- time All-America at Carolina, ranks third in the Carolina indoor record books for the 60 meters and the 200 meters. Demeritte represented the Bahamas at the Sydney Olympics team competing in the 200 meters.
Faustin, another international alumni, represented Haiti at the 2000 Olympics in the 100m hurdles. Two-time All-America while at Carolina, Nadine is third on the Carolina all-time records in the 100m hurdles.
Gamble, the first female in UNC history to win a national championship in a field event, Nicole also boasts six ACC titles and the two ACC meet records in the triple jump. She is the Carolina record holder in the triple jump and is a 12-time All-America. Gamble was the only female triple-jumper to represent the U.S. at the 2000 Games.
Hennagan, a seven-time All-America at UNC, and in 1996 took home two NCAA titles in the 400m and the 800meters. She is a seven-time ACC champion and the ACC record holder in the 400m as well as the Carolina record holder in both the 400m and 800m. Monique also brought home gold at the Sydney Olympics in the 4x400 meter relay.
Johnson, a two-time Olympian having won gold in the 110m hurdles at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. 1992 NCAA champion in the 55m hurdles and four-time All-America, Allen holds the ACC meet record in the indoor long jump. With a total five ACC titles, Allen is the Carolina record holder in the long jump, 55m hurdles and the 110 hurdles.
