After dropping the first three matches of the evening, North Carolina reeled off seven straight victories to defeat ASU, 32-9, Saturday evening at Varsity Gym in Boone, N.C. The win was the Tar Heel's second of the day, having swept UNC Greensboro, 41-0, earlier in Chapel Hill.
With the victory, the Tar Heels even their record at 4-4 on the year, while ASU falls to 3-3.
After the Mountaineers took the first three matches for a 9-0 lead, seventh-ranked JohnMark Bentley got the Tar Heels rolling with a pin of Davey Blake at 5:52 of the 149-pound match. With the win, Bentley moves to 21-1 for the year and has won 12 consecutive matches.
Chris DiGuiseppe followed with a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds, and Jake Reynolds then scored a pin at 1:49 of the 165-pound match to put Carolina ahead 15-9.
A technical fall by 174 pounder Corey Bell at 5:54 and a Nick Richmond 13-6 decision at 184 gave the Tar Heels a 24-9 lead heading into the final two matches of the night. Clint Osborn pulled out a one-point victory, 4-3, at 197, and heavyweight Matt Kenny pinned ASU's Danny Misenheimer at 0:41 to close out the Tar Heel scoring.
Carolina next hosts ACC-foe Virginia at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.
