Men's Tennis Competes In Third Day Of Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- The Tar Heel men's tennis team started individual play on Friday in the main draw of the Omni Hotels/ITA Region II Championships presented by Top of the Hill.
Senior Marcio Petrone, seeded third, advanced through the rounds of 64 and 32 and will compete in the round of 16 Saturday morning. Petrone faces Romain Jurd (Florida State) for a chance to reach the quarterfinals at 9 a.m.
Freshman Geoff Boyd upset seventh seeded Mike Murray (Wake Forest) in the roundof 64, winning 6-2, 6-2. Boyd fell in the round of 32 to Pedro Nieto (VCU) 7-6, 6-1.
Junior Trystan Meniane also won his match in the round of 64, defeating Zack Malmgren (William &Mary) 6-3,6-2. Meniane fell in the following round to David Lowenthal (WFU) 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Nicholas Monroe was beaten by York Allen (Duke) in the round of 64, losing 6-4,1-6,6-4.
Petrone will be the lone Tar Heel competing when play resumes tomorrow at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
