Meredith Krull is a senior from Raleigh and a member of the UNC rowing team. Throughout the year, she will provide TarHeelBlue.com readers with an inside look at her team and the experience of being a varsity athlete at North Carolina.
Now that our fall racing season is over, our new focus is upping our fitness level for a fast spring season. Tuesday was the first day the entire team was back together after the break. We started off practice with a technical steady state row and worked into a few short, intense pieces.
After our break on Wednesday we picked up where we left off, by doing what Joel called the "pyramid of power" in the 4+. This workout is when the boats compete against each other for short intervals of 20, 30, 40 and 50 strokes.
On Friday we had an early morning practice in the erg room. We did a "Happy Hour." This is when the team is divided up into groups of three. Each of these groups is competing to see who can pull the most meters in an hour. It was a really intense and challenging workout, but the enthusiasm that everyone brought to the erg room made it much more manageable.
The intense workouts this week made us realize that we have a very exciting winter training and spring season ahead of us. Log on next week for another update.
Yours in Carolina Blue,
Mer
