Carolina Moves Into Second In Sears Cup Race

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The North Carolina athletic program has moved into second place in the latest Sears Directors' Cup fall standings released Thursday.
The Tar Heels currently have 305 points and scored in five fall sports. UNC finished first in men's soccer, second in women's soccer, seventh in women's cross country, ninth in field hockey and 17th in women's volleyball.
Seven-time champion Stanford University has increased its lead in the Division I Sears Directors' Cup race, presented by the nation's athletics directors. With 486 points, the Cardinal are on top with a cushion of 181 points.
Stanford has scored in six of the seven sports completed, placing in the top 10 in each one, including national championships in women's volleyball and men's water polo. The Cardinal also placed second in men's cross country, third in men's soccer, fifth in women's cross country and ninth in women's soccer. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Moving into second is the inaugural Sears Directors' Cup champion, North Carolina, with 305 points. The Tar Heels are followed by UCLA, in third with 271 points, Brigham Young, in fourth with 200 points, and Colorado, in fifth with 192 points.
These standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country, field hockey, women and men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's water polo. In addition to Stanford, winning national championships were Brigham Young in women's cross country, Colorado in men's cross country, Michigan in field hockey, Santa Clara in women's soccer, and North Carolina in men's soccer.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 for men and 10 for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.
