UNC Softball Sweeps Elon To Open Home Schedule

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina softball team opened its 2001 home schedule Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins over visiting Elon at Finley Field. The Tar Heels defeated the Phoenix 5-0 in the first game of the doubleheader and 9-1 in the second game.
UNC is now 3-1 and will host Appalachian State on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader. Elon is 0-6.
In Game 1, senior Beth Olen and sophomores Quinn Porter and Michael Parrott each contributed two hits to the Tar Heels - total of 11. Carolina scored three runs in the fifth on a triple by senior Michelle Semmes and doubles by junior Kelly Ramsey and Olen. Senior pitcher Radara McHugh earned the win, giving up three hits and striking out six. Sophomore Shannon Courtney pitched six innings and took the loss for Elon.
In Game 2, junior Kelly Ramsey hit a three run homerun in the first inning to cap off a five run opening inning. Senior Michelle Semmes led the Tar Heels in batting going two for three with a single, double and two RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Michael Parrott struck out seven Phoenix batters and gave up only three hits to earn the win. In the third inning, the Tar Heels added four more runs capped off by hits from Semmes and freshman Emily Price. The Phoenix scored in the fifth and final inning on hits by Amy Foster and Amanda Zentner. Emily Hall took the loss for the Phoenix.
