MBB: Indispensible Role Player
Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga
Joseph Forte will play a basketball game today at the
Smith Center. The TV cameras likely will follow him
through the layup lines, the commentators will talk
about how he leads No. 1 North Carolina into its ACC
matchup with No. 13 Maryland. The buzz will be about
how he has scored 21 or more points in six consecutive
games, about how no pressure shot scares him. On
and on. Elsewhere in that layup line will be Jason
Capel. He will do the same drills. He will not get the
same due...
MBB: Mom Knew Which Way Was Best For Forte
Greensboro News & Record/By Rob Daniels
CHAPEL HILL -- It had to be the shoes. Anything more obvious and mom would notice Joseph Forte's violation of the dress code at DeMatha Catholic High School and he'd never escape the house. This way, he could get out one door, in the other and aggravate the authorities, whose school had lots of rules but no girls...
MBB: Doherty's A Radio Sensation
Durham Herald-Sun/By Neil Amato
CHAPEL HILL -- Matt Doherty enters the building calmly. He knows what's coming,
especially with his team ranked No. 1 in the country, having won 17 consecutive
games. He makes a few gentle waves and flashes a smile as the volume increases.
Some grown men wearing light blue get out of their seats and whistle...

Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga
ONES TO WATCH: Asheboro's Dumas perhaps has the most

MBB: Tar Heels Rise To The Occasion
Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga
The No. 1 team in the nation played its first game as the king of all it
surveys Tuesday night. It did so as an underdog. Chalk it up to the
nature of the ACC, the league North Carolina led with a perfect
conference record coming in. Would you want to come into Joel
Coliseum -- black-shirted, deep-lunged Wake Forest fans ringing the
court -- and play with a target William Tell would have no problem
nailing on your back? Likely not. But the Tar Heels did just that, and
survived. Their 80-74 win over the 19th-ranked Demon Deacons -- 1
1/2 point favorites -- was not about one guy taking over, not about
the nation's best team steam-rolling some also-ran...

MBB: Dawson Fires Away, But It Isn't Enough
Greensboro News & Record/By Bill Hass
WINSTON-SALEM - One day short of his 21st birthday, Wake Forest's Craig Dawson played the game of his career. But despite his 29-point effort, the Deacons skidded into sixth place in the ACC standings after an 80-74 loss to North Carolina Tuesday night in Joel Coliseum...

FB: Bunting Learns To Love Selling UNC To Recruits
Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga
The city would turn into suburbs, then country, then backwoods, as
John Bunting made his way around North Carolina for the first time.
All the while, the questions flowed. How big is this high school?
What's the coach like? Has he traditionally sent his best football
players to the University of North Carolina?..

Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga

wrist or anything like that. Get me better, and let's play. "I was just

right in the middle of the season, and I wanted to come back a little faster than the doctor wanted me
to. So I went to a sports medicine clinic."...

MBB: Depth Taking UNC to Great Heights
Durham Herald-Sun/By Frank Dascenzo
CHAPEL HILL -- North Carolina basketball coach Matt Doherty is absolutely right.

MBB: ACC: Ultimate Basketball Challenge
USA Today/By Malcolm Moran
It is Saturday in the Atlantic Coast Conference,
and two coaches confront a new set of
complications. As seen from outside the ACC,
Wake Forest's national ranking would signify
progress after relegation to the NIT last season,
and North Carolina's impending ascent to No.
1 would be more than enough reason for a keg
party. But from inside what has become the
nation's most unforgiving conference this
season, the stakes have just gone up and the
challenges become more dangerous...

Raleigh News & Observer/By Barry Svrluga
CHAPEL HILL -- You heard it late in Saturday's game in the Smith
