RALEIGH, N.C.-The University of North Carolina defeated Tennessee 13-0 and Purdue 6-2 Saturday to remain undefeated at the Triangle Classic softball tournament. The 24-team tournament, being played at Walnut Creek Softball Complex, concludes Sunday.
Due to rain on Friday night that left fields unplayable in the morning, Saturday's games were delayed four hours and began at 2 p.m. UNC met Tennessee, the only other undefeated team in their pool of four, at 4 p.m.
As the visitors, the Tar Heels got on the board quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning. UNC added three more in the second, one in the third and seven in the sixth. Junior Kelly Ramsey led the team with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the sixth. Senior Radara McHugh earned the win to improve to 6-1 on the season.
In its first game of gold bracket play, North Carolina defeated Purdue 6-2 after falling behind the Boilermakers 2-0. Senior Carrie Bates hit a two-RBI single in the fourth to begin the scoring, and the Tar Heels added two more in the both the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Michael Parrott earned the win to improve to 4-0.
McHugh went into the day with a streak of 39 scoreless innings pitched, equal to the school record. After a six-inning shutout against Tennessee and two innings in relief against Purdue, her streak now stands at 47 scoreless innings pitched.
North Carolina continues play at noon Sunday in the gold bracket semifinal with a rematch against Tennessee. The winner of that game advances to the tournament championship at 2 p.m.
Games are scheduled for 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Sunday at Walnut Creek. Admission is $5 for adults, with kids 12 and under admitted for free. Students wearing their softball team jerseys also will be admitted for free.
