Women's Tennis Rolls Past NC State

RALEIGH, N.C.--
The University of North Carolina women's tennis team crushed the NC State Wolfpack, 7-0, Wednesday in Raleigh. The Tar Heels didn't drop a set in any match and improved to 13-5 overall, 4-2 in the ACC.
Marlene Mejia, Julie Rotondi, and Kate Pinchbeck led the way for Carolina with wins in the top three singles slots. Mejia, ranked 14th in the country by the ITA, was leading NC State's Kristin Lam 4-1 in the first set when Lam retired. No. 51 Julie Rotondi handled Katrina Gildemeister, 6-1, 6-3 while No. 75 Kate Pinchbeck topped Jackie Leskovar, 6-2, 6-3.
Kristin Koenig disposed of Kristen Nicholls, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles while Elina Bairos also blanked her opponent in the second set, defeating Myrna Bawono, 7-5, 6-0. Senior Courtney Zalinski rounded out the singles sweep for the Tar Heels, defeating Jennifer Jassawalla, 7-5, 7-6 in the No. 6 slot.
In doubles play, the 50th-ranked duo of Kendrick Bunn/Kate Pinchbeck beat Worsley/Leskovar 8-5. At No. 2, Marlene Mejia/Julie Rotondi stopped NC State's team of Gildemeister/Bawono, 8-5. Elina Bairos and Courtney Zalinski teamed to put down Jassawalla/Lam, 8-1.
Coach Roland Thornqvist was satisfied with the victory. "I am very happy with how well we played today. We did a good job against a tough NC State team. These rivalry games can be difficult to play, but we focused well and competed hard to win the match."
The Tar Heels conclude the ACC regular season this weekend with matches at Clemson and Georgia Tech. The Clemson match is on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m. while the match at Georgia Tech is Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
