Virginia Upsets Women's Tennis In ACC Tournament

Orlando, Fla. - The No. 3 seed Tar Heels fell to No. 6 seed Virginia Cavaliers, 4-3, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Fla. The Cavaliers will advance to the semifinals to play Wake Forest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Virginia won the doubles point with victories from No. 1 Christie Schweer and Henriette Williams as well as at No. 3 from Jen Tuchband and Kelly Weaver. Sophomore Marlene Mejia and freshman Julie Rotondi were the lone Tar Heel doubles tandem to win their match defeating Kim/O'Donnell 8-4. Mejia/Rotondi improved their record to 15-6 overall.
In singles play, the Tar Heels fell short despite wins at the top three positions. At No. 1 Mejia defeated Amy O'Donnell 6-3, 6-0, No. 2 Rotondi defeated Williams 6-4, 6-2 and No. 3 Kate Pinchbeck defeated Christie Schweer 6-2, 6-1. The Cavs picked up wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the match.
With the victory Virginia improves its record to 11-9 while North Carolina drops to 15-6 overall and 6-3 in the ACC. The Tar Heels now await an NCAA at-large bid.
