ORLANDO, FLA. - Events being held today in Chapel Hill, N.C. and Orlando, Fla. will likely determine the winner of the 2000-01 Carlyle Cup, the all-sports trophy being contested this year between the University of North Carolina and Duke University.
Carolina's track and field teams gained one point Saturday in the competition by outscoring their Duke counterparts at the ACC Track Championships in Orlando, cutting the lue Devils' lead to 20 to 18.
Nine points will be determined today. Duke has a rather decided advantage over Carolina in the ACC Women's Golf Championships in Orlando heading into the final day and the Blue Devils will most likely gain those three points to go ahead 23-18.
Going into the final day of the ACC Men's Golf Championship in Orlando the Tar Heel men have an eight-stroke lead over Duke. And the deciding game in the three-game baseball series will be played at Boshamer Stadium this afternoon after Carolina won Friday and Duke won Saturday.
Carolina must hold its lead in the men's golf tournament and win the baseball game for the Tar Heels to have any chance to claim the Cup. If Duke prevails in either event the Cup competition will be locked up by the Blue Devils. Wins in both would put Carolina ahead 24-23. The rowing point will be determined in the ACC Championship for that event next weekend.
Should the two teams tie at 24-24 the Tar Heels would win the Cup because Carolina would hold the #1 tiebreaker having won 12 of 21 regular season head to head meetings between the two teams.
The only fly in the ointment of this whole theory is a potential meetings between Carolina and Duke in the ACC Baseball Tournament next month or between the school's men's or women's tennis team in NCAA Championship competition in which win back points provisions would come into play. But as they say that bridge can be crossed at that time.
The bottom line is that we will know a lot more at the end of today as to who will win the first Carlyle Cup.
