CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Megan Collins, a University of North Carolina junior from Chapel Hill, has been named the first recipient of the Rick Brewer Scholarship in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Collins will receive the initial $1,500 grant for the 2001-02 school year.
Fund-raising for the Brewer Scholarship began in June of 2000 as a means to honor the former sports information director at the University of North Carolina. Brewer, a 1971 UNC journalism alumnus, worked in the SID office from 1971-2000, including 25 years as its director, before taking early retirement from the University in February 2000. He still works at UNC as sports information director emeritus.
Friends and colleagues of Brewer contributed nearly $75,000 to establish the scholarship in his name in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Collins is a fitting recipient of the first grant. Megan is a rising senior in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She has worked in the Athletic Communications Office since her sophomore year at Carolina and worked primarily with the Carolina gymnastics team this past year. She served as the media director of the 2001 EAGL Gymnastics Championships held in Chapel Hill this year.
Last summer, she was an intern in the Boston advertising sales office of Sports Illustrated. For the past three years she has served as the manager and statistician for Carolina's nationally ranked women's lacrosse team as well as playing for the team as a reserve goalkeeper.
