CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina continued one of the more amazing streaks in Atlantic Coast Conference athletic history during the 2000-01 school year as for the 14th successive year Carolina has won as many or more conference championships than any other league school.
The streak began in 1987-88 and over the past 14 years Carolina has won more conference championships than anybody else 10 times while four times tying for the year's title-winning lead. In each of the past three years Tar Heel teams have shared the lead with conference neighbor Duke. Carolina, Duke and Clemson all won four titles each in 1998-99, Carolina and Duke won six championships apiece in 1999-2000 and both Carolina and Duke won seven titles in the year just completed. During the 14-year streak UNC and Clemson shared honors in 1988-89 as well. The other 10 years found Carolina winning more titles on an outright basis.
This past year saw each of the league's nine schools win at least one ACC championship. That was assured when Wake Forest won the baseball crown on Sunday. But Carolina and Duke dominated, winning a combined 14 of the 25 titles. No other school won more than two. UNC's titles came in women's soccer, men's soccer, volleyball, women's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field and softball. Duke's seven titles came in men's cross country, women's basketball, men's basketball, women's golf, men's tennis, women's tennis and men's lacrosse.
In addition to the streak of 14 straight years, UNC has now accomplished this particular feat in 18 of the past 19 years and 19 of the past 21 years. The last time Carolina went two successive years without claiming the most ACC titles was 1978-79 and 1979-80.
