Carolina Now 14th In Sears Directors' Cup Standings

CLEVELAND, OHIO - The University of North Carolina is currently in 14th place in the 2000-01 Sears Directors' Cup standings. The standings released Tuesday were the second for the spring sports season. The final standings will be announced next week at the conclusion of the College World Series.
All points for the competition have been added in with the exception of baseball. There is a possibility that some teams currently behind Carolina could dislodge the Tar Heels from their 14th place perch when the final standings are announced.
Stanford won the Cup for the seventh straight year. The Cardinal currently has 1,259.5 points and UCLA will finish second. The Bruins have 1,138 points.
Carolina is 14th with 728.5 points. Duke is 15th with 721 points. Carolina is a lock to finish as the top-ranking ACC team for the seventh time in eight years of Sears Cup competition. It was not a banner year for ACC teams as for the first time in history no conference team will finish in the Top 10 of the competition.
In spring sports Carolina scored in the following areas: women's golf was 55th for 28 points, men's golf was 41st for 42 points, women's lacrosse was fifth for 40 points, softball was 25th for 30 points, women's tennis was 17th for 30 points, men's tennis was 33rd for 20 points and men's outdoor track and field was 57th for 24.5 points.
esides Carolina and Duke other ACC teams included Virginia in 30th place, Wake Forest in 33rd place, Clemson in 34th place, Florida State in 35th place, Maryland in 40th place, NC State in 56th place and Georgia Tech in 61st place.
