CHAPEL HILL -- The Educational Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization that primarily raises scholarship funds for student-athletes and provides capital for facility projects at the University of North Carolina, is temporarily relocating its offices to the Europa Center in Chapel Hill.
The Foundation has been housed in Koury Natatorium since the Dean E. Smith Center opened in 1986. Koury Natatorium is located adjacent to the home of the UNC men's basketball program.
The move is necessary as the Foundation is renovating part of the facility next to the swimming pool into a practice gymnasium for the men's basketball team. The practice facility will enable the program to have more flexibility in its practice schedules and pre-game preparations and will enable the Smith Center staff to schedule more non-basketball events in the Smith Center. The Foundation will also gain working space in the new location.
"The Educational Foundation is excited about the opportunity to assist the athletic department in the construction of this practice facility," said Educational Foundation President John Montgomery. "The addition of a practice facility will allow Coach (Matt) Doherty to maintain a normal practice routine, yet allows the Smith Center staff to schedule functions in the arena. The Foundation will continue to hold events in the practice gym on game days and the athletic department will be able to hold special events there, as well."
The Educational Foundation offices will move to the Europa Center, located off Highway 15-501, at 100 Europa Drive, Suite 371 beginning July 16.
Foundation offices will be closed for moving purposes on Thursday, July 12, and Friday, July 13, but staff members will be checking voice mail both days. The post office box, telephone number, fax number, email and website addresses will remain the same.
The Foundation will maintain its current reception area in Koury Natatorium and will be open on football and basketball game days only. If members have any questions regarding the move, please contact the Foundation at (919) 945-2000.
